Tanzania Wildlife Safaris

anzania is blessed with an abundance of wildlife, from the North to the South, making it the top destination in Africa to tick a safari off your bucket list.

Here in the north of Tanzania, you will find some of the county’s most beautiful national parks, where witnessing The Big Five in their natural environment is a truly unforgettable experience. The government has also done a wonderful job in protecting much of the land to preserve this great asset. In fact, nearly 30% of Tanzania’s terrestrial land is under protected status.

A safari on the Northern Circuit could take you from the vast iconic plains of the world-famous Serengeti to one of Africa’s many natural wonders, the awe-inspiring Ngorongoro Crater. Other popular highlights include The Tarangire, Lake Manyara, Arusha National Park, Lake Natron and Lake Eyasi.

All parks are located within easy reach of one another; each one offering its own unique qualities and different experiences. Large herds of elephants walking with their young; a pride of lions as they stalk their next meal; or a spectacular African sunset are just a snapshot of some of the things you can expect to see.

Perhaps one of the biggest drawcards for many safari enthusiasts is Tanzania’s migration. Known to be one of the greatest wildlife spectacles on earth, this annual occurrence sees millions of wildebeest, zebra and gazelle migrate from the Serengeti to the Masai Mara Reserve in Kenya in pursuit of fresh grasslands and water. If seeing the migration is your goal, visit our National Parks page (link to national parks page), to find out when is the best time to visit.

There are many different types of safari holidays you can enjoy across Africa and Tanzania as well. This amazing East African country offers the full range and has access to all the wild animals. Along with the stunning creatures to observe, it also boasts gorgeous landscapes, hot weather, and friendly local guides. In addition, it gives you chance to explore the local culture and combine your safari with adventures such as climbing Mt Kilimanjaro or relaxing on the nearby beaches.

The main types of safaris in Tanzania are as follows:

  1. Game Drive Safaris – this involves going on an organized safari and traveling around the national parks or game reserves via a four-wheeled drive vehicle, driven by a guide. It offers a great option if you want a more relaxing safari or can’t walk around much for medical or personal reasons.

  2. Walking Safari – this type of safari involves walking around the park of the reserve under the leadership of an experienced local guide.

  3. Horse Riding Safari – this is definitely one for the more adventurous traveler. On a horse-riding safari, you ride around the game reserve on horse-back and actually alongside the animals you are observing. This gives unique access to the animals and a completely different experience.

  4. Bird Watching Safari – a little different from the standard safari, this involves looking out for rare birds rather than the usual land animals. A local guide will take you out into the park and give you chance to see all manner of unusual birds.

  5. Balloon Safari – this is certainly the most unusual way to enjoy Tanzania’s wildlife! A balloon safari involves going high up in a hot air balloon to experience the joys of the wildlife from the sky. It gives you a great bird’s eye view of what’s happening but obviously may not be for you if you prefer to get a bit closer to the action.
